CANVAS REBEL MAGAZINE

Can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?

Yes, I have. My wife and I recently invested in a bakery called “Lucy Pearl’s Sweets.” When I introduced the idea to my wife, she was surprised I even considered venturing into the food and hospitality industry. By most accounts, it was risky, and very few entrepreneurs made it past the first two to three years! But after hearing the very thorough, comprehensive, and promising pitch from the company’s founder, we both agreed this was well worth the deal. It did not hurt that the CEO and controlling owner was my former manager. I worked with her during my tenure as an Engineer for Union Pacific Railroad.

H.P.S. MAGAZINE

You have a lot of titles behind your name. Author, Executive Producer, on the Board of Directors, Husband. How do you find the time to give everything you’re passionate about the right amount of passion it deserves?

The short answer is I am a Union Organizer by trade. Most of my adult career has been dedicated to literally organizing the lives of people who count on me to work in their best interests and make sure they are afforded fair and equitable treatment as mandated by labor laws and informed by my best judgement. Whether professionally or personally, I apply the skills I’ve learned to help keep people’s lives (and yes that includes my own) in order. Honestly, I have been this way since I was a kid. Some people joke I am borderline OCD!

SHOUTOUT HTX

Hi Carlos, what role has risk played in your life or career?

Risk is a necessary component of success. There are very few aspects of life that do not involve some form or risk, especially since outcomes are never guaranteed. Things happen. And because I understand this, I factor risk into all my decisions. When you are prepared for the threats, challenges, obstacles, you become better equipped to handle the hurdles. You have to be realistic about the good and the bad in life or you will never be motivated to try new things, explore ideas and concepts. I am not afraid of the word “no”, and I am not intimidated by “gatekeepers.” That is very empowering attitude. It’s one I wish others would take more.
